Designers must prepare now for a changing work environment. Learn how to plan "healthy" buildings for enhanced occupant interaction, retention and overall health and wellness within an urban context. The Dillon is the first mixed-use development of it’s kind in downtown Raleigh’s Warehouse District. This unique project provides three case studies where you’ll explore methods of planning, tools to improve occupant productivity and satisfaction, and strategies to comply with local zoning while meeting the needs of the client, using real-world projects including:

  • FMI: the new space represents a cultural shift from closed cellular offices to a fully collaborative environment to increase productivity and collaboration
  • Stewart: leveraging assets of community, amenities, and thoughtful special planning to foster a healthy environment were necessary to create a space where they would be able to retain and recruit a younger generation of engineers and designers.
  • The Dillon Roof Terrace: compliance with Raleigh UDO meant finding an out of the box solution to meet both the clients needs to maximize street and sidewalk frontage and the need for public outdoor space.

You'll leave this course with a set of replicable tools, frameworks, and strategies for designing responsive, site-specific


  1. Examine the importance of designing buildings that support health, wellness, and collaboration to improve occupant productivity and satisfaction.
  2. Discuss methods of planning for wellness, equity, and flexibility to build innovative and collaborative work environments.
  3. Discuss how to balance design with the different interests between private investment, public amenity, governmental regulations, and community needs in an urban context.
  4. Explore how design - views to outside, access to natural light and seamless access to colleagues - can impact
    mental health of occupants.


Alison Briggs | Associate | Gensler

Alison Brigg’s brings a diverse design background through her experience working with corporate, and technology clients. Alison is a highly enthusiastic and collaborative designer with a passion for the holistic design process; from concept development and finish selections to construction documentation and administration. She brings leadership to both the design and technical sides of each project by leading vision sessions and programming efforts, as well as working through details during the design process. Her expertise in workplace and technology trends allows Alison to bring this knowledge to each project she works on, helping to find the best solution for each individual project’s needs.

Matthew Evans MLA, ASLA | Project Designer | Landscape Architecture | Stewart

Matthew has six years of design experience working in landscape design and landscape architecture. He has experience in urban design, campus master planning, athletic park planning, playground design, commercial landscape design, university landscape design, neighborhood design, and way finding design. He is an expert in graphic communications including hand graphics, photo-realistic digital graphics, and 3D graphics. His design approach combines technical expertise with an artistic sensibility to craft elegant design solutions. Matthew has extensive software experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Infraworks360, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup Pro, Google Earth, ArcGIS, and GRASS GIS. Matthew is based in the Raleigh office.

Katie Lawler, NCIDQ | Gensler

Katie Lawler, NCIDQ, has over six years of design experience in interior design. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her experience ranges from corporate interiors, hospitality, multi-family residential and aviation. Katie is a detailed oriented and task driven designer that finds her passion in building client relationships and seeing that the vision for their organization is fulfilled through the project’s design. As a local member of Gensler’s Design Resilience committee, she understands the importance of incorporating sustainability goals in every project to help organizations become more adaptable and responsive to our ever-changing world. Katie enjoys working with clients and colleagues at all levels of the design process; from strategy and visioning sessions all the way through construction administration.
