Session V: Aggressively passive: employing passive systems for load reduction™

Properly designed, a building captures existing resources such as light, wind, and solar radiation to provide for the comfort and needs of occupants. Passive systems work in concert to allow the building to manage energy demand through design. This session will build on the concepts introduced in Sessions 3 and 4 to flesh out a holistic strategy to designing passive systems.

Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:

• define passive systems and identify specific elements of a passive design,
• appraise the effectiveness of various passive strategies based on a site’s available resources and
• determine which of a suite of strategies will be most likely to be successful on a particular site.

Accessibility Update: the 2012 North Carolina Building Code/2009 ANSI A117.1

The Accessibility Seminar traditionally provided by The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is being offered this year with support by AIA Triangle. AIAT looks forward to welcoming all to this annual workshop.

Course Summary:

“This course will review the major changes from the 2009 Code as compared to the 2012 NC Building Code’s accessibility requirements and will also review the differences found in the 2009 A117.1 standard with emphasis on Residential Accessibility, including Accessible, Type A and Type B units.”

The presentation will begin with the major changes for areas that are not necessarily specific to only residential occupancies (i.e. components of accessible routes (ramps, walking surfaces, parking, etc…) and then focus in on accessible, type A and type B dwelling units based on 2009 A117.1 with NC Amendments.

Speaker: Dominic Marinelli - Vice President, Accessibility Services

Dominic Marinelli has been with the United Spinal Association for 23 years and heads the organization’s Accessibility Services (ACS) team. ACS provides registered training and technical assistance on the latest state and federal accessibility requirements to design professionals and code enforcement officials throughout the country. Mr. Marinelli holds a Masters of Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is certified in code enforcement by the New York State Department of State Codes Division and as an Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner by the International Codes Council (ICC).

Refunds (minus a $5 per ticket service fee) will be provided PRIOR to April 27. After April 27, there will be no refunds.

This year's AIA Triangle Golf Tournament is being held at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State University. Shotgun start at 1pm SHARP and the format is Captain's Choice. Lunch and prizes are included in your registration.

Cost: $125 per player. After May 1, the cost is $150 per player

NEW in 2012- Registration includes: Green Fees, Cart, Range balls, Lunch, Pre-Tournament Clinic, Mulligan package, Beat the Pro Contest, Expanded Cart Gift Bag and Drinks

Individual registrations are welcome - you will be paired up with other players.
